Our last wwoofers burned out our pressure cooker, killed it stone dead! Bad timing too as we have loads of produce to bottle. So, we thought we'd push the boat out and get a Presto canner http://www.gopresto.com/products/products.php?stock=01781 We thought this would be the better solution as it can hold big jars and a lot of them and at €69 we thought great value, the catch (there is always a catch) €80 for DHL to bring it over from the US. Any way it arrived today, very sturdy, very high standard of finish, as we expected from American made things (our inverter is a Trace-American and our mini-tiller is a Mantis-American but with a Thai Honda motor, OK fair enough Honda motors are good). Any way, back to the canner. I was looking over this purchase admiring the quality workman ship, then I turned it up-side-down where I read the words 'MADE IN CHINA'. The thought occurred to me, do we make anything useful in 'the West' these days?

No, we dont make anything that is considered low tech. Of coures this has been the plan all along - let the business go to the lowest cost producer hence we have the current situation. NAFTA North American Free Trade Alliance and GATT General Agreemant on Trade and Tariffs were Rockefeller initivies.
Whene we start to get control of our country again one of the items that will be Job 1 is get our manufacturing base back - the cost of an item will be what it costs to manufacturer in that country - this is the real cost to manufacturer an item not some wretch working 12 hours a day in China for 2 dollars a day.
Permalink Reply by Diane, Denizen on August 20, 2012 at 21:58 Thing is Brian, cheap items made in China are not that cheap. Japanese products used to be cheap and tatty, but now Japanese technology is reliable but costly, this will be what happens to China too. Rockefeller will probably move on to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh after he has made money out of the Chinese. It is time to review all treaties and get out of most of them, but politicians won't do it because they are fear based beings. Ireland needs courage (like Collins) and vision (like Lemass), what we have is waffling Edna! Unless something changes we are really fucked!
