The free Apps below will work on Apple OS, Linux and Windows computer systems.

Windows 7 has some useful things going for it, like a Start button, Microsoft Works (a working version of Office), Microsoft Paint and a handy calculator, but Windows 8 features none of those things, and also adds complications to opening normal documents.

Fortunately, the internet has some great FREE open-source applications to fill the gaps that Microsoft creates.

I use many of these Apps on a daily basis, just click into them, they will guide you through downloading and setting them up.

-----

  • VLC Media Player - play DVDs and videos, convert between file types, stream and record camera, watch and listen to whatever you want without filling in a questionnaire
  • Paint.NET - great replacement for MS Paint, but much much better (comparable to photo-shop)
  • Lightworks - professional video editor - free version (see the comments for more info)
  • Videopad - Easy to use video editor with plenty of features (screenshot in comments)
  • Avidemux - simple video editor with some good features
  • Ccleaner - for cleaning crap and rubbish files, and speeding up your system
  • Open Office - Brilliant replacement for Microsoft Office, open and edit DOC files, spreadsheets, graphics and more
  • Linux Mint - if your absolutely sick of Windows and want a replacement that works

some other computer using tips.....
On the Windows 8 screen (that's trying to be an iPhone), The DESKTOP button is in the bottom left.

Right-clicking on things - gives extra options including "properties", "open with...", and making desktop shortcut icons to frequent files, apps or locations.

Notepad - for writing ideas.

Watch out for scams online, people trying to get your information or details https://www.scamwarners.com/forum/index.php

CTRL-ALT-DEL - pressing Control, Alt and Delete simultaneously gives access to your Task Manager, and the undervalued and elusive off switch.

Torrentz is gone - the next best clone is Torrentz 2 https://torrentz2.eu/

The hash locations all still work, just insert 2 after torrentz in the link address.

To stream torrents, you need a client like utorrent http://www.utorrent.com/

Search torrents for the media or software that you want, be aware of languages, versions and sometimes viruses.

To Convert Videos and Audio files between formats, use "Any Video Converter", which also makes MP3s from video. http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

I see from TNS facebook link that Windows has started automatically downloading its Win 10 operating system onto win 7 and 8 computers, its doing it automatically against people's will.

Allegedly, this app can be used which prevents the download from happening, but i have not tested it https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

If your wondering which installed software is just commercial-ware, and if you want to get rid of it, take a look at this type of site http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/index.aspx

Thanks for the tip about making backups in the free version.

I'm new to Lightworks, having edited a few videos on Magix Movie Maker, which is also a top-shelf program but on Magix there is a persistent interface with all the buttons on it. www.magix.com/us/movie-edit-pro/detail/

It would make a huge difference in Lightworks to have more obvious access to familiar editing tools such as cut, slice, select-from-marker, and more right click options. I expect most of them are there, but its hard to find hidden features when you don't know to look for them, I think their special keyboard would come in handy.

A couple of comparison screens ......
